G.H. Bass & Co. founder George Henry Bass became an apprentice to a leather craftsman at the age of eighteen. After studying for two years in Wilton, he moved to Woburn, Massachusetts to begin practicing his craft. In March 1876, at the age of thirty-three, Henry purchased shares in E.P. Packard & Co. and entered the shoemaking industry. Three years later, he became the sole shareholder of the company and renamed it G.H. Bass & Co. after himself. In 1910, Bass created the "Ranger Style" moccasin—a standard soft-soled shoe designed for campers and outdoor men. In 1936, another classic shoe from the company, the "Weejun," was introduced. Its popularity has endured through the years. The Weejun shoe was inspired by Norwegian design. Its defining features are hand-stitching and leather tassel decorations on the upper. In the 1960s, driven by the craze among American college students, Weejun shoes were so popular that demand outstripped supply. After more than 130 years of development, Bass has been recognized as one of America's finest leather shoe brands. Its classic styles are mature and steady, while newly introduced models are comfortable and modern. The excellent quality of the leather makes them truly irresistible.
