Goitom Woldegebriel is an Eritrean tailor who lived for 30 years between the war-torn nations of Eritrea and Ethiopia. When his homeland Eritrea gained independence, he named his son áwet, meaning victory in Tigrinya. In 1998, áwet was forced to flee his homeland and became a refugee, moving from one camp to another overnight. In 2000, áwet received asylum in the United States. In 2020, áWET launched his eponymous brand in New York City. áWET New York was founded with two commitments: to create an iconic line of "life wear," and to employ and support garment workers most affected by the pandemic.
