Bernardo was founded in 1946 by architect, artist, and bestselling author Bernard Rudofsky. Inspired by the ancient architectural and social theories he proposed in his 1944 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Bernardo sandals were designed to liberate the foot from the footwear of the 1940s. Rudofsky is also credited as the inventor of the modern women's sandal.
