As a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Cynthia Rowley originally intended to become a painter. However, after an encounter with a customer at a local department store, she decided to take a different path. After graduation, the aspiring designer moved to New York City and applied her art education background to a vibrant clothing line, which includes simple yet lively printed dresses, precisely tailored pants, and ruffled blouses. Thanks to a $3,000 startup fund from her grandmother, Cynthia Rowley apparel was officially launched in 1988. Over the following decades, the initial collection expanded to include everything from Cynthia Rowley home goods and accessories to other exquisite items.
