Eastbay was founded in 1980 when high school runners, coaches, and lifelong friends Art Juedes and Rick Gering found themselves dissatisfied with the running shoe options available to athletes near their hometown of Wausau, Wisconsin. The pair knew that for small-town athletes, getting the right running shoes often meant a long trip. Their idea? Bring the shoes directly to the athletes. With just over $7,000 worth of running shoes and a dream, the duo hit the road in sweatshirts and T-shirts, setting up shoe clinics across central Wisconsin. At every stop, they educated athletes and coaches on the benefits of the shoes and provided descriptive price lists. They both knew that when athletes look good, they perform better, so for nearly two decades, they gave coaches the opportunity to outfit their teams with the latest styles. Like any local business, there were risks and tough times, but their hard work and dedication laid the foundation for Eastbay.
