Fnac was founded in 1954 by Frenchmen André Essel and Max Théret, with its first store located in an attic of a building in Paris. At its inception, it mainly offered discounted products to customers, but required customers to become members first to enjoy the benefits. In 1966, Fnac began offering discounted products to non-members and opened a second store in Paris, by which time it had 580 employees. By 1977, Fnac had opened a total of 12 branches in Paris. Fnac Darty has now merged into Fnac Darty, a leader in the distribution of cultural products, leisure, technology products, home appliances, and services in Europe. The group employs over 25,000 people and, as of the end of 2022, had a network of 987 stores, positioning itself as a major player in French e-commerce.
