In September 1997, Renata DePauli reserved the domain "herrenausstatter.de", and Alexander DePauli wrote the first version of "Germany's first online men's clothing store". At that time, about 10% of Germans owned a mobile phone, and there were no smartphones. Additionally, around 10% of people in Germany had internet access, often via weak "ISDN" connections. Amazon did not yet exist in Germany, and Ebay was taking its first steps. Google had been around for a long time. Apart from books and software, no one saw a future for the retail industry in this. In the eyes of most partners at the time, the idea of selling clothes over the internet was ridiculed. Nevertheless, herrenausstatter.de was launched in October 1997 - with a manageable range of Falke socks in three colors, white and light blue shirts from Seidensticker, a few ties, and a few styles of underwear. The online store offered a total of 40 products.
