Marimekko is a home, textile, and fashion company based in Helsinki, the Netherlands, with its headquarters located in Helsinki, Finland. It made a significant contribution to 1960s fashion. Particularly noteworthy are its brightly colored printed fabrics and simple silhouettes, which are used in women's clothing and home decor.
Marimekko was originally a Finnish fabric printing company called Printex, which boosted fabric sales by printing attractive patterns on textiles. It was not until 1953 that designer Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi joined the company and boldly proposed"Good clothing should allow the wearer to move freely and comfortably"—a concept comparable to the revolutionary fashion theory introduced by Chanel in France.
