Fashion is one of the most wasteful industries, with over 2,000 garments discarded every second. Founder Julie Wainwright saw how disposable consumers viewed fashion and envisioned a future where this could change. With the support of current President and COO Rati Levesque, Wainwright founded The RealReal in 2011 with an ambitious goal: to extend the lifecycle of luxury goods and create a more sustainable, democratized future for fashion.
Initially a scrappy tabletop startup, Julie and Rati would drive U-Hauls to visit shippers. Today, as a leader in authenticated luxury resale, our mission remains the same: to empower consignors and buyers to extend the lifespan of luxury items in a way that honors luxury brands and contributes to a more sustainable future for fashion.
