The story of Zoflora began in 1922, when Thornton and Ross was founded by two business partners, Nathan Thornton and Philip Ross. At the time, Nathan Thornton was a chemist and operations manager at a tar smelting and ammonia plant in Huddersfield, which produced a range of by-products, including disinfectants and soaps.
In the early 1920s, there were no pleasant-smelling disinfectants for household use. Phenol was mainly used to effectively combat bacteria; however, it left behind an unpleasant odor. Nathan Thornton recognized a gap in the market and used all his technical knowledge to develop the disinfectant Zoflora. The result was a powerful disinfectant that killed twice as many bacteria as phenol, and thanks to oils extracted from real flowers, it smelled wonderful.
