Elie Tahari was born in 1952 in Jerusalem, Israel, to parents who had moved from Iran to Israel in their early years. From 1953 to 1957, the family returned to Iran before moving back to Israel. After his parents divorced, his father remarried, and Elie was sent to an orphanage in Rishon LeZion before later moving to Tel Aviv. He spent the following years at Kvutzat Schiller and a boarding school for the Israeli Air Force in Haifa. In 1971, Elie immigrated to the United States as an electrician. After moving to New York, he looked for work in Manhattan's Garment District, where he learned the fashion business. Throughout the 1970s, Elie primarily designed women's clothing. In 1974, he became the first designer to open a fashion boutique on Madison Avenue.
