Makanai was born in 2004 as a tribute to the century-old tradition of handcrafting gold leaf at its predecessor company, Yoshitaka Gold-Leaf Foundry. The gold foundry was established in 1899 in Kanazawa, central Japan. Women working at Yoshitaka were exposed to harsh working conditions—the extreme heat and dryness made the environment demanding for skilled gold-leaf artisans, all of whom were women. The ladies at Yoshitaka began making their own skincare products using materials on hand. As a result, their skin became more radiant and beautiful. This secret knowledge was passed down from mother to daughter, generation after generation. After a hundred years of trial and error, our skincare formula was born.
