Steven Landman came to the United States from Israel in 1986 and began selling ties for his brother at a flea market in New York City. The market was a haven for immigrants. It was a cornucopia of interesting people who brought their own unique cultures, backgrounds, and styles. A year later, he opened a tie shop in downtown Manhattan called "The Tie Gallery." The Tie Gallery would become Landman's attempt at becoming a designer. In the beginning, Landman's success came from sourcing women's fabrics, primarily floral and jacquard patterns, and turning them into ties. He started small, until he began selling at trade shows.
