The 1890s were a period of transformation. As the century drew to a close, the world began to move away from the rigid, didactic Victorian era. Urban centers continued to develop, and new technologies, such as the introduction of electricity into garment production, created a boom in the ready-to-wear market. In 1898, Thomas Mayes Lewin and Geoffrey James Lewin opened the first T.M.Lewin shop on Panton Street in London. Shortly afterward, the company relocated, and T.M.Lewin established itself on Jermyn Street in 1903, the home of English shirtmaking.
